He had been battling multiple health issues for the last few years and passed away around 1:30 am at a private hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata, as confirmed by his son Subhranshu Roy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr He played a key organisational role in building TMC as a challenger to the Left Front and later served in important positions in the central government during UPA\u2011II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Founding member and key strategist of the\u00a0<strong>All India Trinamool Congress (AITC)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Known in political circles and media as the\u00a0<strong>\u201cChanakya of Bengal politics\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0for his back\u2011room strategies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Served as\u00a0<strong>Minister of State for Shipping<\/strong>\u00a0and later as\u00a0<strong>Union Railway Minister<\/strong>\u00a0in 2012.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"early-life-and-entry-into-politics\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Early_Life_and_Entry_into_Politics\"><\/span>Early Life and Entry into Politics<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Publicly available records show that Mukul Roy was born in January 1955 in West Bengal. He was re\u2011elected in 2012 and became one of the party\u2019s main voices in the Upper House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Elected to Rajya Sabha in\u00a0<strong>April 2006<\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mukul_Roy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Served as\u00a0<strong>TMC leader in Rajya Sabha<\/strong>\u00a0from May 2009 to March 2012.<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mukul_Roy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He became Mamata Banerjee\u2019s key representative in Delhi, handling alliances, coordination with the Congress\u2011led UPA government and internal negotiations.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/who-was-mukul-roy-former-railway-minister-trinamool-congress-founding-member-who-later-joined-bjp-11123309\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"minister-of-state-for-shipping-and-railways\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Minister_of_State_for_Shipping_and_Railways\"><\/span>Minister of State for Shipping and Railways<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the second UPA government, Roy was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Minister of State for Shipping<\/strong>\u00a0(2009\u20132011), handling a supporting role in the maritime and port sector.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later made\u00a0<strong>Minister of State in the Ministry of Railways<\/strong>\u00a0after Mamata Banerjee left the Railways portfolio to become Chief Minister of West Bengal in 2011.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Railways, he was considered Mamata\u2019s trusted lieutenant, representing TMC\u2019s interests in the central government.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/who-was-mukul-roy-former-railway-minister-trinamool-congress-founding-member-who-later-joined-bjp-11123309\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mukul-roy-as-union-railway-minister\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mukul_Roy_as_Union_Railway_Minister\"><\/span>Mukul Roy as Union Railway Minister<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mukul Roy briefly served as the&nbsp;<strong>32nd Union Railway Minister of India in 2012<\/strong>.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oneindia.com\/politicians\/mukul-roy-71744.html\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He became full Railway Minister in\u00a0<strong>March 2012<\/strong>, after Dinesh Trivedi resigned over a controversial railway fare hike.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immediately after taking charge, Roy rolled back the passenger fare increase announced in the budget presented by Trivedi, aligning with Mamata Banerjee\u2019s stand against the hike.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>His tenure was politically sensitive and short\u2011lived:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In July 2011, when he was Minister of State for Railways, he was removed from that role after reportedly not following the Prime Minister\u2019s directive to visit a train accident site in Assam.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/who-was-mukul-roy-former-railway-minister-trinamool-congress-founding-member-who-later-joined-bjp-11123309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In\u00a0<strong>September 2012<\/strong>, his term as Railway Minister ended when TMC withdrew support from the UPA\u2011II government over policy issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though he was not Railway Minister for long, he remains part of the list of leaders from Bengal who held the powerful portfolio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"political-journey-tmc-to-bjp-and-back\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Political_Journey_TMC_to_BJP_and_Back\"><\/span>Political Journey: TMC to BJP and Back<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mukul Roy\u2019s political career later saw multiple party shifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"core-tmc-strategist\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Core_TMC_Strategist\"><\/span>Core TMC Strategist<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within TMC, he was considered one of the architects of the party\u2019s 2011 Assembly election victory in West Bengal, which ended more than three decades of Left rule. He was often described as Mamata Banerjee\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>No. 2<\/strong>&nbsp;in the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"joining-the-bjp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Joining_the_BJP\"><\/span>Joining the BJP<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<strong>September 2017<\/strong>, Roy resigned from TMC and the Rajya Sabha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He formally\u00a0<strong>joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 3 November 2017<\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneindia.com\/politicians\/mukul-roy-71744.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, he contested and won from Krishnanagar North as a BJP candidate, becoming a BJP MLA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His move to BJP was seen as a major defection at the time, given his organisational knowledge and inside understanding of TMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"return-to-tmc\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Return_to_TMC\"><\/span>Return to TMC<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the 2021 Assembly polls, Roy&nbsp;<strong>returned to TMC<\/strong>&nbsp;in June 2021. He was welcomed back by Mamata Banerjee and described as a \u201cfamily member\u201d returning to the party fold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the switch created legal complications. On&nbsp;<strong>13 November 2025<\/strong>, the Calcutta High Court terminated his MLA post on grounds of&nbsp;<strong>tergiversation<\/strong>&nbsp;(party switching) under anti\u2011defection provisions.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mukul_Roy\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This meant that by the time of his death in February 2026, he was no longer an MLA but still recognised as a senior TMC leader and founding member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"health-issues-and-final-days\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Health_Issues_and_Final_Days\"><\/span>Health Issues and Final Days<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reports from his family and hospital sources indicate that Mukul Roy had been suffering from multiple health problems for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>His son, Subhranshu Roy, stated that he had\u00a0<strong>multiple ailments<\/strong>, including Parkinson\u2019s disease and kidney problems, and had undergone three surgeries.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/mukul-roy-ex-bengal-railway-minister-tmc-leader-passes-away-at-71-cardiac-arrest-son-mukul-roy-death-101771814417503.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He had been admitted to a Kolkata hospital for over two years and was reportedly in a\u00a0<strong>coma<\/strong>\u00a0for a period before his death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the night of&nbsp;<strong>22 February 2026<\/strong>, he suffered a massive cardiac arrest at Apollo Hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata.
